Mrs. Veena George, the minister of health in Kerala, announced that a panel of experts, led by the district medical officer (DMO), will look into the claim that a piece of cotton was accidentally inserted into a womans uterus during a cesarean section at the Neyyattinkara government hospital.

The minister stated that the DMO has been instructed to submit a report after conducting an inquiry into the incident. According to sources in the DMO office, an expert team has already begun an investigation into the incident, and it will provide its findings to the minister in the next day or two.

The incident happened on July 26, 2022, as Mrs. Jeethu, a woman from Neyyattinkara, underwent labor and delivery surgery at the public hospital. She was brought to a private hospital in March 2023 with significant stomach pain, eight months after the surgery. During the abdominal scan, doctors found a piece of cotton inside the uterus and recommended surgery.

The woman underwent a risky procedure to remove the cotton piece from her uterus. The patient was kept in the hospital for 20 days after the surgery for post-operative recovery. The patient demanded that action be taken against the doctors. As a result, the health minister intervened in the issue.
